About Us

My name is Christie Free and I am the writer and editor for freestylecamping.com and I am a big fan of freedom.  To me, freedom means hoping in my van, Vincent, heading out on the road with a full tank of gas and no plan.  It isn’t for everyone, but for those of us who relish this style of adventure, there are skills and information that is crucial to our safety and comfort. 

My husband Chris and I live in Seattle with our daughter Adelyn and dog Charlie. We are avid hikers, backpackers, snowboarders and fisherman. Over the years we have developed a set of skills for stealth, off-radar, incognito (whatever you want to call it) camping. We call it freestyle camping.

We camp in a converted utility Dodge Ram 3/4 ton van, Vinny (Vincent Van Goes). We’ve got a full sized mattress raised up 18″ with storage underneath, with room for Charlie’s dog bed and plenty of bins between the bed and front seats. We have even camped with our infant daughter in Vinny, though not travelling perfectly legal with me riding nap-style in the back. 

This blog compiles all our hard earned and hard learned experience in how to camp freestyle, off-radar, off-grid, incognito, what have you.  We also take submissions for camping hacks, favorite routes and free camping spots.  We would love to build our freestyle camping community so please reach out at info@freestylecamping.com
